Are Ductless Air Conditioners More Efficient?
When installing or upgrading your HVAC system, you’ll want to consider options that are more energy efficient. The more energy efficient an HVAC component is, the more money you’ll end up saving over the long term on energy bills – even if the initial cost is greater.
Keeping this in mind, one of the things you may want to consider investing in is a ductless air conditioner. Ductless air conditioners have recently seen a surge in popularity over the past few years and for good reason.
What is a ductless air conditioner?
A ductless air conditioner is just that – an air conditioner that doesn’t need a duct system. A central air conditioner needs ducts to disperse the cool air it produces throughout the home. Ductless air conditioners are small units that are installed in several different zones throughout the building. These units produce cool air and disperse it directly into the space.
How are ductless air conditioners more efficient?
The following are just a few of the reasons why ductless air conditioners are more energy efficient than central air conditioners:
- Zoned cooling – Ductless air conditioners are installed into different zones throughout the house. While this may seem like a drawback at first – after all, you only need a single unit with a central air conditioner – it’s actually a huge advantage. Having designated zones means that you can control the temperature of different spaces of your home separately. With a central air conditioner, you have no choice but to cool the entire home. With a ductless air conditioner, you can cool the zone the living space is in, and leave the upstairs bedrooms alone. Basically, you’ll use much less energy cooling only the parts of the home that are in use.
- Less energy loss – One of the problems with duct systems is that they can be very inefficient. Ductwork that isn’t properly insulated will lose heat as warm air travels through the ducts during the winter, while its cool air will warm up from the surrounding heat during the summer. Not to mention that any leaks that occur in the ducts will cause cool air or heat to be lost as well. This simply won’t happen with a ductless air conditioner – because there are no ducts!
Other benefits to ductless air conditioners
The fact that they can save you a substantial amount of energy over the long term is a huge plus, but ductless air conditioners have a lot more going for them as well. The units are small, which means they don’t take up much space – and they’re flexible in how they can be installed. You can attach them to the ceiling or install them onto your walls. In fact, installation is a breeze and won’t take very long to do – whereas a central air conditioner must be properly hooked up to an existing duct system to be effective.
